In a recent e-mail conversation to a friend, I realized that many people want to work at home, but they are not sure how. The internet is buzzing with work at home scams (many that I have been prey too!). Avoiding these scams and finding a true work at home career can be for you. It takes a lot of time and patience. Trust me, I know! My goal in this series is to share with you step by step how you can earn money as you work at home.
Today, we will start with five essential steps to getting started:
1) Pray and Get Counsel
Before you do anything, pray and get counsel as you pursue work at home jobs. Blindly jumping into a career path just because it sounds good is the quickest way to sink. My husband and I had a six month plan in action for me before I would leave a 9-5 job for a chance for me to stay home. Make sure you have peace in your heart before you move ahead. It’s a big step of faith. No, make that leap of faith.
2) Set Goals And Get Organized
By nature, I like things organized. But, I’m also human. It gets tough trying to juggle jobs, relationships, housework and my marriage. However, I learned quickly that organization and goals will help you stay on top of things. When I fail to prioritize my daily tasks, I know the day ahead will be rough on the edges. For me, my faith and my husband come first. Next, my housework and job related projects. A simple way to stay on top of things is to use a work at home binder. Mine is filled with chicken scratch, but each day I work off a list of set goals.
3) Read And Ask Questions
A great way to boost your work at home journey is to read as much information as you can. There are many trustworthy web sites and books that have been written on the subject. This will help you to get insight, inspiration and ideas for your future. I wrote my own (short) but personal journey here. Once you find web sites and authors that you admire, don’t be afraid to ask them questions.
4) Plan, Plan, Plan
I gave planning an entire paragraph to itself. Why? Because it is really that important. Learn to plan everything. Do plans always work? Nope, but they help you stay focused and on track. Plan your daily routines, plan what actions you plan to take in finding a work at home job. Plan a reasonable schedule that you can actually adhere too. Plan for the job search to take a long time, so that you have an emergency fund to work with. Planning is simply a responsible way to pursue a work at home career.
5) Be Flexible And Have Fun
You are probably laughing at this one. Didn’t I just say plan? Yes, but at the same time, be flexible. Maybe your goal is to work at home designing blogs. However, you may start out with a simple layout design for local church that needs banners and fliers from time to time. Be willing to dive and get dirty. The more opportunities you look into, theĀ better your chances of finding the right work at home career path. More than anything, though…have fun. If you are bored with a work at home proposition, don’t pursue it. The goal is for you to find something that you enjoy while you work at home.
