When you have a family, it often seems as if there is no time to think, let alone begin a business.  Whether you’re running the kids back and forth to various practices, preparing a nutritious meal at home, or any of the other countless tasks that mothers have taken on, there just doesn’t seem to be any time left over for you, or that idea you had for a home-based business.

However, with a little preparation, good decision making, and determination, you can make your dreams of working from home a reality. Here are five tips for making that happen:

1. Get your priorities straight. This can be done by examining every aspect of a typical day and deciding what works and what is little more than a time drain. Is it really necessary for your child to be involved in three sports, or would they be just as happy playing with their neighborhood friends, thus freeing up a substantial chunk of time? Likewise, can some of your cleaning responsibilities be shared by your children or partner?
2. Get all of your ducks lined up. Be sure that you have everything that you need to simplify and streamline your home life. If you or someone in your family is disabled, purchase a wheelchair van to make errands and family outings easier; if you intend to do a lot of work on your computer, invest in a laptop to provide optimum flexibility. There are many things that go into having a home that runs smoothly enough as to free up a substantial amount of time for entrepreneurialism.
3. Get yourself and your family onto a strict schedule. By knowing what to expect and when, you and your family will better be able to manage your time together. This will also give you the opportunity to determine exactly how much time you have to devote to your project, and when you will be able to do so.
4. Get motivated. Once you know that you have everything planned, scheduled, prioritized, and so forth, it’s time to do some serious thinking and planning on how best to implement your plan for working from home. As with everything else, this planning process needs to be as specific as possible, with the needs of you and your family firmly in mind.
5. Get started. Now that there’s nothing holding you back, get started on making what may have once seemed like a harebrained work-from-home idea a reality. If you have planned properly, then this should be a fairly seamless process, and even though there may be glitches at first, you and your family will be prepared to handle anything and everything that happens.

Reputation Matters

Most people are hesitant to do business with someone they know nothing about.  This is why sites like Angie’s List, and the Better Business Bureau are so invaluable: they provide insight into what the qualities of a business’ products/services are.  For this reason, be sure to ask for input from anyone with whom you do business.  Join the BBB if you can, and be sure to address any customer concerns as soon as you can.  By working to create and maintain a professional reputation, you will have laid a solid groundwork for the future.

Be Social

Networking will be your best friend while you are establishing yourself.  Go to events where you can meet and greet potential clients, join every social networking site that exists, and always have a ready supply of business cards on-hand so you will always be prepared, no matter where you are.  Let your hunger for success (and a steady cash flow) guide you through this process, and be shameless when presented with an opportunity to tout your business.  You may hear, “No thanks” a lot, but you will also hear, “Tell me more,” which will make it all worthwhile.

Make Yourself Heard

In addition to joining social networking sites, why not start a blog, so you can write candidly about your struggles and successes with your home-based business.  Not only will this provide you an opportunity to network and meet other business owners (and potential clients/customers!), but you will also be able to receive honest feedback from those who read your blog and leave comments.  Constructive criticism and legitimate feedback will help you guide your business down the path of success.  Just make yourself heard, then listen to what others have to say.

Become an Expert

You’ve undoubtedly heard the adage, “Jack of all trades, master of none”; while this may seem like a great way to be able to cover many different businesses at once, thereby bringing in more income, what it really means is that you are spreading yourself thin, and making things a lot more difficult than they need to be.  Instead, choose your niche, and then do everything you can to be the best at what you do.  By focusing on your strengths and working to make them even stronger, you can be sure that the service you are providing will be in high demand, and your business will flourish as a result.

There are many more ways in which you can brand yourself, but these five are as good a place to start as any.  The thing to remember is that this isn’t something that will happen overnight.  However, with a little patience and a lot of hard work and ingenuity, you will begin to notice results.
