Since January, I embarked on a journey to leave the average job of 9-5 for good. For the past three months, there have been a lot of learning curves (as with anything in life!), among other things. So I’ve compiled a list of things I have learned from, and that will help you on your own work at home journey.
One of the best things you can do for yourself, is learn to surround yourself with like minds, motivation, and lots of inspiration. So without further ado, let us see what steps you can take to get off on the right foot with your work at home goals!
Step One: First off, it is important to set a long term goal regarding your work. Learn to track your progress, and ask someone to keep you accountable to it. For me, my spouse usually checks in with me to see if I have been working on particular projects. He is also good about reminding me it is okay to take breaks from work (I tend to be a workaholic of sorts). One you have a long term goal in stone, you can work from their to set the rest of your, what I like to call, “mini goals”.
Step Two: Make a schedule for each week regarding your work. This will help you keep track of projects, due dates, and any other important data that you will need to get yourself going each week. You may want to choose a “model” work week to do your work on. Perhaps the “four day work week” will help, or something along those lines.
Step Three: Change your surroundings! Sometimes, working from your home office can be more distracting than ever. So you may find a better alternative by taking rotations at a variety of coffee shop or even the library. Somewhere that you will not be distracted to do your dishes, or dusting, etc. This is probably the biggest weakness that I have faced, and have learned to leave for a while to get a head start on projects that are due that week.
Step Four: Explore your options! Just because you have taken a specific project to work from home with, you may find that keep a multitude of projects will keep yourself even more motivated. And while on that subject, it is also important to learn when to stop taking on too many projects. Just enough to keep your work interesting, and motivating.
Step Five: Love what you do! If you start to get bored with your work, or lack in motivation, take a breather. Sometimes a quick walk at the park, flipping through a few magazines, or reading up on the latest news will be the break you need. It’s important to cultivate the things you love, all the while achieving a great balance in your life regarding your work at home projects.
Now, you have five simple steps that you can learn from as you start your journey with your work at home market. You may find this mantra easy to remember “Love, Work, Home”. Happy working!
